<text>Mrs. Mae Jenkins Phillips
From this lady comes another side of the Cosby story, for this lady was born and raised out of peculiar circumstances. She is my father’s oldest brother’s mother-in-law and is a sort of third grandma to me (I have around ten).

The Phillipses of Tennessee were (and are) probably one of the biggest bunches on Cosby, and, tho you wouldn’t say on the other side of the tract (from a religious standpoint), they were less cumbered beneath the Calvinistic burden than most families, loved to visit and sing, were more carefree (tho they had their share of burdens) and rambunctious, and thus happier than a lot. The Phillips were clannish and there was a lot of cousin marriages and inter-breeding back yonder. (For some reason or other my fathers people disdain kin-marriages, and refer to the age old belief that it causes insanity, sickliness, slim-assedness, punyness, and handicaps such as blindness (actually they didn’t have much to say about it for it is characteristic of the McMillons not to run their mouth (except among themselves) but this is part of their feelings about inter-marriage, for those beliefs are common). Not that I know of any craziness occurring. Interbreeding of families was quite common among isolated and mountain communities. More times, brains are born out of distant cousin weddings.
Anyway Maw Maws mother stayed with an old man [when her parents was dead (wrong)] to have a place to stay and ultimately had an illegitimate child by him, Maw Maw.

Jenkins who loved her married Maw Maws [page 2] mother (before she was born—wrong), thus Maw Maw had a daddy when she was born, tho her real father was always good to her and her mother. Maw Maws children always referred to their two grandaddy’s as grandpa up the road and (confused with Grandpa Phillips) grandpa down the road. Maw Maw had to tough it coming up tho, for she had to stay with different people to work and earn board and get schooling such as it was in those days. It was thru this travelling and seeing all kinds of different people and peoples habit of singing snatches as they worked, that years ago in the wagon days, Maw Maw Phillips learned many traditional ballads and folksongs. At a young age she married Walter Phillips who played the banjo some, and played such ditties as “Coffey Grows on White Oak Sprouts,” “Free a Little Bird,” “Johnson Boys,” and “Poor Ellen Smith.” She had a tough time raising a family too, for often Walter get into fights (Grandpa nearly killed him one time) and Maw Maw didn’t even know if he would get home alive or not. She said when they were growing up, the young boys when they were mad, would sing “how in the hell did the old folks know, I like sugar in my coffee-o?” My father said they used to sing “the old grey mare she shat on the swingle tree.”
Because Mae was unsheltered all her life and knew it, the cold hard way for what it was, perhaps her love for her family was deeper in a sense than those whose lives were strictly controlled by severe intolerant families.

[page 3]
And it was thru her being around all kinds of situations that music, most likely a comfort to her oftimes in periods of loneliness and hurt, that the old songs grew to be a part of her. She can sing the ancient and the modern. “The War Is A Raging,” “The Soldier and His Lady,” “Wagoners Lad,” “A Maid Being Young,” “500 Miles,” “Dark is the Color of my True Loves Hair,” “Will Weaver-O,” “Railroad Lover,” and many other ballads and love songs, the “Sailor Boy” for instance and the “House Carpenter” and “Black Jack David.”

Dear Bobby & Autumn

How are you? I am fair - a lot to do - I stay exhausted at all times!

Bobby - I have you down on Saturday - I'll pay you $100 & $50 on expense - maybe $60 for expenses - I'll find you a place to stay - Nannies - I guess. I stay overflowed!

I hope you work, holding! I'm afraid grant money - will fade, away.

I go on a tour with John McCutcheon in the late fall. Dale got so - he fills in (at times) He has an unbelievable voice, so beautiful - It makes chills - run over you. I don't push but he's stepping in - He's helped me on a few concerts.

Come on Friday - If you can - you are always welcome, you know - Love,
Janette -
Joe & I go to Japan in July - to sing!
I'll send you - more ado. - later -</text>

One morning I rambled
Down by the sea shore
The wind it did whistle
And the waters did roar.

I heard some fair maiden
Give a pitiful sound
And it sounded so lonesome
In the waters around.

I never will marry
Nor be no man's wife
I expect to live single
All the days of my life.

My love's gone and left me
The one I adore
He's gone where I never
Shall see him no more.

The shells in the ocean
Will be my death bed
While fish in deep water
Swim over my head.

She plunged her fair body
In the waters so deep
And she closed her blue eyes
In the waters to sleep.

I've just returned from the salt salt sea
And it's all for the love of thee.

I could have married a Kings daughter
And she would have married me
But I refused the crown or gold
And its all for the love of thee.

If you could a married a Kings daughter
I'm sure you are to blame
For I am married to a house carpenter
And I think he's a fine young man.

Will you forsake your house carpenter
And go along with me
I'll take you where the grass grows green
On the banks of sweet Relief.

If I forsake my house carpenter
And go along with you
What have you to maintain me on
That would keep me from slavery.

[verso]:
Aunt Lou Brookshire

I have seven ships on the ocean wide
All a sailing for dry land
Three hundred and fifty jolly young men
They're all at your command.

She picked up her sweet little babe
And kisses she gave it three
Saying stay at home with your papa dear
And keep him company.

They had not been on the ship two weeks
I'm sure it was not three
Till she lamented in her lovers arms
And she cried most bitterly.

They had not been on ship three weeks
I'm sure it was not four
Till they sprang a leak in the lovers boat
And it sank for to rise no more.

Dear Bobby,

Thanks a lot for the words to "I came to Ky in 1805. This may be the same song, however, my brother sang a line that went "Oh Babe won't you open the door; I'll never go strolling no more."

My dad used to play "Polly put the Kettle on and we'll all take tea. "Polly" in place of "Molly."

My parents all treated me kindly
For they had no child but me
My mind began to ramble
On this we couldn't agree
My mind began to ramble
And oh what grieves me so
Is to leave my aged parents
Their face to see no more.

There was a rich old gentleman
He lived in a town close by
He had one only daughter
On whom I cast my eye.

I told her my intention
was far across the main
I asked her if she'd prove true to me
till I returned again
She said she'd prove true to me
if death didn't prove unkind
So we kissed shook hands and parted
and I left my girl behind.

I went over on Broadway
I met the driver there
He handed me a letter

He handed me a letter
Which gave me to good understand
That the girl I left behind me
Had married another man.

Mrs. Walter Phillips

He said poor boy don't cry
As I stood there a grieving
He said poor boy don't cry
Oh money I have plenty
and it's for you and I.

My horses I'll turn over
My company I'll resign
We'll ramble the world over
For the girl you left behind.</text>
