Description

This is a photograph of Spilman Home for Girls before the 1906 construction of Treat Annex on the campus's upper quadrangle where Blackwell Hall now stands. Construction on the building began in 1895 under Reverend Adonnas Everett Booth, then the Mars Hill College president. It stood unfinished until 1899 and became the first boarding house for female students in 1901. In 1903, Benjamin W. Spilman who had purchased the building donated it to Mars Hill College and named the building for his son, Raymond Pollock Spilman Home for Girls.
